Giovanna Barbosa

Giovanna Barbosa is one of the few Brazilian artists who has achieved great domestic as well as international success for her work with shells.

After being widowed more than 15 years ago, she moved to the shore in Espirito Santo,
where she was inspired by the variations of shells she encountered during her daily walks on the beach.
As an innovative visual artist, the idea of creating ballerinas struck her fancy.

With her success, she opened an atelier in which she works with 43 other artisans who she has trained.
To hand-affix each shell to the tutu, she hired unemployed and under-employed women in order to give
them a sense of value and worth in their own abilities.

Giovanna has won numerous national visual art contests as well as an award as “Best Woman Entrepreneur”
in 2007 for her role in uplifting those women most in need.
